Fire Department Case Study

How a Metro Area Fire Department Scaled Programming, Reduced Injuries, and Elevated Recruit Training with BridgeAthletic

A 1,100-person department replaced spreadsheets and paper testing with individualized programming across 40 firehouses.

Background

A metro area fire department serving a workforce of over 1,100 personnel operates one of the region's largest municipal fire and emergency response organizations. The department's wellness team functions in a dual capacity: running structured fitness programming for recruit academies in the morning and providing clinical physical therapy services to active-duty firefighters for the remainder of the day.

With 40 firehouses spread across the city and no ability to place a dedicated trainer at each location, delivering consistent, individualized programming across the entire department required a technology-driven solution.

The Challenge

Before BridgeAthletic, the department's wellness lieutenant was managing programming entirely by hand. Writing individualized plans in Excel, working from paper forms, and manually converting testing data after each academy session was time-consuming and difficult to scale. As demand from firefighters seeking structured guidance grew, the limitations of that process became harder to absorb. Programming became more repetitive, individualization was harder to maintain, and tracking progress across a large, distributed workforce was a persistent challenge.

When the department expanded its focus into recruit academy programming, the need for a more capable platform became clear. Tracking individual performance data for an entire cohort, while simultaneously managing clinical caseloads, required a system that could reduce administrative overhead and give the wellness team more time to coach.

Why Bridge

After trialing several platforms, the department selected BridgeAthletic for two reasons.

Scale Without Sacrificing Individualization

100+ recruits and two physical therapists meant there was no realistic way to write individualized programs for everyone by hand.

Automatic Progress Tracking

A platform that tracked athlete progression automatically, eliminating manual data entry and making program adjustments far easier.

The department started with a smaller user count, demonstrated adoption, and expanded the following year. What kept them on the platform was not just the software, but the support behind it. The Bridge team worked closely with the department to surface workflows they were underutilizing and helped them get more out of the tools already available to them. That guidance shaped how the wellness team approached testing cycles, programming structure, and the AI tools built into the platform.

The Results

Strongest Recruit Class to Date
Highest baseline-to-finish strength gains the department has tracked.
RPE-Driven Training Adoption
Recruits trained to precise intensity targets, producing a cleaner data trail.
Faster Clinical Programming via AI
Rehab programs built in minutes, even with limited time at the end of a clinical day.

The most recent recruit academy produced the strongest performance outcomes the department has seen. The cohort entered with high baseline strength numbers and left with measurably higher output at the end of the program. The wellness team attributes much of that improvement to an increased investment in education around training parameters, particularly RPE.

With Bridge surfacing RPE targets within each workout, recruits developed a clearer understanding of how to train to a specific intensity. They learned how to adjust weight when a set broke down, how to log accurate data when they missed a target, and why that information mattered for their own progression over time. The result was more precise training, a cleaner data trail, and strength gains the team had not seen in previous classes.

In the clinical setting, the AI programming tools have changed how the team approaches rehabilitation programming. With limited time at the end of a clinical workday, the ability to generate a structured program quickly has become a meaningful efficiency gain.

For the next recruit class, the department plans to use Bridge to automate its testing cycle entirely, pulling data directly from dedicated testing days rather than converting and entering results by hand. The team is also set to present their BridgeAthletic implementation at the Science to the Station conference in Kansas City this November, sharing their methodology and outcomes with fire departments from across the country.

“Bridge took us from spreadsheets and repetitive group programming to individualized training for an entire recruit class. We're tracking the data, we're seeing the strength gains, and we're starting to connect it to injury reduction. That is exactly what we were hoping for.”
